Figurines of an old Chinese sage playing the guqin, making pottery, reading a book, and reading a scroll. Perfect for people who love ancient Chinese culture or are interested in traditional musical instruments or pottery making.

Chinese culture is part of the country's proud tradition, with hundreds of stories beloved by young and old alike. These values include moderation, the importance of keeping promises, respect for elders , the importance of following cultural paths, justice and injustice, and the power of wisdom . Legends and stories illuminate China's traditions and culture throughout the centuries.

Guqin

Guqin placed on a wooden table against a white background Kaosix

The guqin is the modern name for a seven-stringed plucked Chinese musical instrument . It has been played since ancient times, and its history stretches back over 5,000 years. It has traditionally been favored by scholars and intellectuals as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement. It is sometimes referred to by the Chinese as the father of Chinese music or the instrument of the sages. In imperial China, a well-educated scholar was expected to be proficient in four arts: qin, qi, shu, and hua; that is, the guqin, chess, calligraphy, and painting. The guqin has always been considered the symbol of high Chinese culture.

Pottery

China has long played a leading role in the evolution of ceramics and its cultural impact on the world. It has been the pioneer of the ceramic world for thousands of years. It is the birthplace of porcelain, glazes, and high-fire ceramics, as well as numerous styles and techniques of form. Much of what we know about Chinese culture can be traced through dynasties and the evidence found at archaeological sites across the country.

Book

Kaosix Old Chinese Bamboo Books

Books record human thought and action; they reveal the growth and spirit of a nation's culture. Written documents existed in ancient China long before the word shu came into use , meaning "book," in the early years of the Warring States period (402-221 BCE). They took the form of tablets carved from bamboo or other types of dried wood. The tablets were called "dogs." Each "dog" contained a line of 8 to 40 characters, as in literary writings, and up to 17 lines, as in official documents and letters. A number of "dogs" bound together with a leather or silk cord, more or less in the form of a book as we know it in modern times, is called a "tze," which in its original usage was one of the names for a book.

Parchment

Drawing of an old Chinese parchment from the Chinese New Year in red Kaosix

The invention of paper is attributed to the Chinese Ts'ai Lun, who, in 105 AD, reported to Emperor Hoti that experiments in making paper from fibers (probably from disintegrated tissues) had been perfected. It would be another 500 years before the Japanese discovered this paper through their communications with Korea. Sheets of this paper, made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree, were introduced to the country by Buddhist monks during the Nara period (708-806 AD).
