You can also wrap it around your wrist to wear it as a bracelet, or use it traditionally in your yoga or meditation practice. Malas are necklaces often used in spiritual practice . Also called japa mala, mala bracelets originated in India over 1,000 years ago and have roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga. The beads of a mala can be made of seeds, sandalwood, rosewood, or stones. The size of these beads varies from 6 mm to 10 mm in diameter, but most malas are made with 8 mm beads. Even if you don't practice meditation, mala bracelets are an excellent tool for concentration . Mala beads help the wearer to pray; the mala is a type of rosary with which one can recite mantras, using the mala beads to count the number of mantras (a mantra is a spiritual assertion spoken aloud).

What is a mala bracelet (japa mala)?
Mala bracelets originated in India 3,000 years ago and have roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga. The beads of a mala can be made of seeds, sandalwood, rosewood, or stones. In the yogic tradition, the beads are used in the practice of japa mala to recite mantras during prayer. A complete cycle of 108 repetitions is counted on the mala so that the practitioner can focus on the sounds, vibrations, and meaning of what is being said. A simple and common example of a Sanskrit mantra often chanted at the end of a yoga class would be: om shanti shanti shanti, which is a call to connect with inner peace.
In Tibetan Buddhism, the 108-bead mala is an important element that brings positive energy . Monks also use them to reduce stress by rolling them between their fingers, and to induce calmness by counting the beads.
A tassel is a decorative fringe sometimes added to a mala. It is usually made of threads or strands of fabric and is attached to one end of the mala. It serves several purposes. In some traditions, it has spiritual significance and is considered a symbol of good fortune and protection . In other traditions, it is simply a decorative element that adds a touch of style and elegance to the mala. Besides its decorative function, the tassel is also often used to mark the end of a meditation or prayer session . When using a mala to count mantras (sacred phrases or words) during meditation, the tassel marks the beginning and end of the session. This helps the user keep track of their progress and creates a sense of ritual and structure in their practice.
The Guru bead (above the tassel). This bead signifies that you have completed a cycle . Once you reach this bead, you can stop chanting or begin again. If you are using the mala bracelet alongside your meditation practice, you will repeat your chant 18 times, one cycle for each bead.
This mala bracelet is an excellent choice to wear around your wrist or neck, or to carry in your pocket to remind you of your intention to live virtuously and mindfully.
