A Buddhist monk in a saffron robe praying with the Namaste greeting gesture.

Who are the Buddhist monks?

Buddhist monks, devoted spiritual guides, have been an essential part of the Buddhist tradition for centuries. They exist to spread the Buddha's teachings , guiding people toward wisdom and inner peace. They live in monasteries, where they study the Buddha's teachings.

Activities of Buddhist Monks

Buddhist monks dedicate their lives to meditation, the study of sacred teachings, and acts of charity . Their day is filled with prayer, contemplation, and compassion for all living beings. They may also engage in charitable activities, such as building schools or hospitals, or distributing food to the poor.

The Greeting Gesture

The statue of a standing Buddhist monk in a blue robe displays the greeting gesture known as Namaste in India, though it is called by different names in other Asian countries. It is a symbol of respect and spiritual connection . Used in Buddhism to greet someone, to show respect or gratitude, this act of greeting transcends cultural boundaries, representing gratitude, compassion, and unity among all beings. The Namaste gesture involves joining the palms together in front of the chest. The eyes are closed, and the head is bowed. It is often used upon arrival and departure, during rituals or prayers, and when meeting someone of higher rank. The Buddhist monk's greeting is a universal gesture used in many different cultures . It is a way to show respect for others and for life itself.

It can also be used to express:

  • Gratitude
  • Compassion
  • Prayer
  • Meditation
  • The concentration
  • Humility
  • The submission
  • The union

Humility

The statuette in a white robe, seated in the lotus position, perfectly captures the monk's gesture of humility , with his right hand at chest level, ready to receive the Buddha's teachings. The outward-facing edge of the hand invites... learning . These are unique and refined decorative objects .

Clothing of Buddhist Monks

This statuette wears the traditional Buddhist robe, called a kesa, which symbolizes simplicity and modesty . This traditional attire is composed of specific pieces unique to Buddhist practice. The kesa is usually saffron-colored, the color of Buddhism . Buddhist monks also wear a cloth covering the chest and leaving the left shoulder bare (ansa), a rectangular piece of cloth for sitting (nisidana), and several other pieces of cloth for various uses.
