The Story of Kshitigarbha

  • Kshitigarbha, also known as Jizō in Japan, holds a special place in Chinese Buddhist history. This benevolent figure is revered for his compassion and his role as protector of souls , especially children and travelers. In China, he is often depicted as a standing statue, like the one we offer here.
  • The history of Kshitigarbha in China dates back centuries and is closely linked to the spread of Buddhism in the country. Buddhist teachings found a receptive audience in China, where Kshitigarbha became a revered figure and is frequently depicted as a Standing Buddha statue. His reputation as a protector of souls, guiding the deceased on their journey to the afterlife, deeply resonated with Chinese believers.
  • In Japan, Kshitigarbha is venerated as Jizō , and he plays a similar role as a protector of children and souls in transition. This beloved figure is often depicted in Japanese temples and shrines, where people pray for the safety of their children and peace for departed souls.

The Bodhisattvas

Bodhisattvas, frequently depicted as standing Buddha statues, occupy a central place in Buddhist tradition and play a crucial role in Buddhist teaching and practice . They are spiritually advanced beings who have vowed to pursue enlightenment for the benefit of all beings, rather than seeking their own personal enlightenment. The term "Bodhisattva" can be roughly translated as "being of awakening" or "being of enlightenment."

What distinguishes Bodhisattvas is their immeasurable compassion for all living beings . They commit to helping others liberate themselves from suffering and attain enlightenment, even if it means remaining in the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation (samsara) to achieve this. Their commitment to forgoing personal enlightenment until all beings are liberated from suffering makes them exceptionally noble in the Buddhist tradition.
Bodhisattvas are frequently depicted in Buddhist art, each embodying specific qualities such as wisdom, compassion, generosity, and more. They serve as a source of inspiration for Buddhist practitioners, demonstrating the path of altruism and selfless service.

Kshitigarbha's devotion to protecting souls in transition and children is an illustration of the profound compassion that characterizes Bodhisattvas.

Kshitigarbha's vow

Kshitigarbha's vow is to become a Buddha once hell is completely empty . This means he has committed to remaining in the cycle of birth and death (samsara) for as long as necessary to help all beings be freed from suffering. His commitment to this immense task testifies to his boundless compassion, and this is why he is frequently depicted as a Standing Buddha statue.

Kshitigarbha is specifically tasked with saving beings from suffering during the long period extending from Shakyamuni Buddha's parinirvana (final entry into nirvana) until the arrival of the future Maitreya Buddha. This period is considered an era of spiritual transition, and Kshitigarbha plays a vital role in guiding souls through this journey .

His noble vow to remain in service to others until suffering is eradicated is a source of inspiration for many Buddhists.

Elements of Kshitigarbha in this Standing Buddha Statue

  • Khakkara: Kshitigarbha holds a khakkara in his right hand, a spear with a vajra-shaped tip, a powerful Buddhist symbol. This spear symbolizes his ability to remove obstacles and guide souls on their spiritual journey. It also represents his commitment to protecting and supporting those who seek refuge in him.
  • Chintamani: In his left hand, Kshitigarbha holds a wishing bead, known as the Chintamani. This bead symbolizes Kshitigarbha's ability to grant wishes and meet the needs of beings. It represents his role as a protector of souls and his boundless compassion for all living beings. The wishing bead is a constant reminder of his inexhaustible benevolence.
  • Kasaya: Kshitigarbha is dressed in a kasaya robe, a traditional robe worn by Buddhist monks. The kasaya robe symbolizes simplicity, renunciation of material possessions, and devotion to the spiritual path. It serves as a reminder that Kshitigarbha renounced personal enlightenment to dedicate himself to helping others.
