Seated Buddha statue Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy.

Guanyin (Guanshiyin) is one of the most popular deities in the pantheons of Buddhism , Taoism, and Chinese folk religion . She is associated with Mahayana Buddhism. Known as the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion , Guanyin is worshipped not only in China but also in Korea, Japan, and other countries. Guanyin is found in almost every Chinese temple in the world. She is even present in tea: Tie Guanyin is a popular choice in Chinese restaurants, making the goddess's name ubiquitous worldwide.

Origins of Guanyin

Painting of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion (Kaosix)

Guanyin is actually an amalgamation of many deities. Guanyin began her journey to Chinese sainthood as the male Avalokitesvara , the bodhisattva of compassion . However, as the deity evolved to be increasingly associated with feminine yin energies, she slowly transformed into the version known and beloved today. Avalokitesvara, whose name roughly translates to "lord who looks upon the world," was translated as Guanshiyin, meaning "perceiving the sounds of the world." This name was later shortened to Guanyin . Representations of Guanyin before the Song Dynasty (960-1279) depicted her as male . Later, she developed attributes of both sexes, in accordance with the Lotus Sutra. Around the 12th century, Guanyin was interpreted as entirely feminine - being depicted, sometimes, with a child in her arms, implying the relationship between the goddess and motherhood .

Representations of Guanyin

Today, Guanyin is most often depicted as a woman wearing a white robe . Sometimes she is shown holding a willow branch in her right hand, a symbol that juxtaposes her beauty with the powers of exorcism. In her left hand, she often holds a jar of liquid to purify the pain of those who pray to her. Her image is adorned with pearls , considered a feminine yin element. They hang around Guanyin as physical manifestations of the full moon, a symbol of perfection . In Chinese Buddhist iconography, Guanyin is often depicted sitting cross-legged in meditation . She is frequently shown with a lotus flower , which is both the Chinese symbol of fertility and the Buddhist emblem of purity . This is why seated Buddha statues of Guanyin are often found in temples, restaurants, and homes.

The goddess of mercy, her teachings, the legends surrounding her life, and her personality continue to inspire Buddhist masters . Known for her kindness , she is also considered an icon of femininity in modern Buddhism. Millions of devotees worldwide turn to her in times of need, fear, or despair. A great protector and benefactor , her heart is filled with profound compassion and unconditional love, and her energy is akin to that of God. Because of her commitment to helping humanity in matters of family, career, health, and relationships, her maternal and all-powerful energy helps to resolve many injustices .
